In a surprising twist of fate, actress Eva Longoria played a pivotal role in saving the production of the iconic movie franchise John Wick when it was on the verge of collapse. The original film, starring Keanu Reeves, faced a financial crisis during shooting, running out of funds just before completion.
As the production team scrambled to secure the necessary funding, Longoria stepped in with $6 million to cover the budget shortfall. In return, she secured a promise that she would be among the first investors to be reimbursed, according to Business Insider.
Directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch revealed that the production was just 24 hours away from shutting down completely. Producer Basil Iwanyk had exhausted all available financial options, including maxing out his credit cards, while both directors and Reeves had invested their own money into the project. The dire situation prompted the Creative Artists Agency (CAA) to reach out to its high-profile clients, eventually leading to Longoria's involvement.
“She came to the rescue and provided the gap financing,” Stahelski recounted, emphasizing the critical timing of her support.
Longoria's investment proved to be a wise decision, as John Wick grossed an impressive $87 million at the global box office. The franchise has since expanded to include three sequels, collectively bringing in over $1 billion worldwide.
Reflecting on the experience, Leitch shared that during an awards season event, Longoria expressed her satisfaction, saying, “Wow, that was the best money I’ve ever spent. It paid back significantly for her.”
Interestingly, it wasn't until after filming that Stahelski and Leitch learned that their mystery benefactor was Longoria. “Basil took us out to dinner, and we were laughing about all the bulls–t that happened, and he said, ‘By the way, funny story, you know who gap financed you? Eva Longoria,’” Stahelski recalled, still astonished by the revelation.
Longoria’s timely intervention not only saved the film but also positioned her as an unexpected hero in the world of Hollywood financing.
