The interim government of Bangladesh has requested that Durga Puja celebrations pause during the times of azaan and namaz. This directive aims to ensure that musical activities and loud celebrations do not overlap with Islamic prayer times.

Retired Lt Gen Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, an adviser on home affairs, confirmed that puja organizers have been instructed to turn off musical instruments and sound systems during these periods. The organizers have complied with this request. Chowdhury emphasized that the pause should start five minutes before the azaan.

Durga Puja 2024 will be celebrated from October 9 by Bengalis in India and Bangladesh. This year, Bangladesh plans to set up 32,666 puja pandals across the country, including 157 in Dhaka South City and 88 in the North. This is a slight decrease from the 33,431 pandals set up in 2023.

Chowdhury also assured that there will be heightened security at the puja pandals to ensure peaceful celebrations and prevent any disruptions.
