Kolkata: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, during a media interaction on Thursday, called on Kapil Sibal to step down from his role in the legal proceedings related to the Kolkata rape-murder case. Sibal, a former Congress leader, is currently representing the West Bengal government in the Supreme Court concerning the case.

"I would like to request him to withdraw from this case. This is the sentiment of the people of Bengal," Chowdhury stated. He added, "Given the public outrage in Bengal, it would be better if you do not defend the criminals." Kapil Sibal, a senior advocate in the Supreme Court, is part of a 21-member legal team representing the West Bengal government in the ongoing proceedings regarding the brutal crime. The case is being heard by a three-member Supreme Court bench, including Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra.

The West Bengal government has faced severe criticism from the court for its failure to prevent the crime and for the mismanagement of the investigation that followed. The case centers on the rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose body was discovered at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Chowdhury also criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that she met with the victim's family and attempted to offer them Rs 10 lakh in compensation to silence them.

Expressing his dismay, Chowdhury remarked, "I feel bad seeing people call you names on social media, especially because you were once a minister in our party, holding the significant position of Union Minister of Human Resource Development. Taking all this into consideration, I sincerely request you to withdraw from this case."
