Thane Police will present Malay Pradeep Mehta, the owner of Amudan Chemical Company, in court today in connection with the Dombivli boiler explosion. This tragic incident on Friday resulted in 11 deaths and over 60 injuries. Authorities have also detained Malay Mehta's mother, Malti Mehta, from Nashik.

A majorfire erupted at a chemicals factory after a boiler explosion in Dombivli, Thane district, Maharashtra, on May 23, resulting in four deaths and 56 injuries. Officials reported that the explosion occurred in the boiler of Amber Chemical Company in Phase 2 of the Dombivli MIDC area.

On Friday, Siddhesh Kadam, Chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, inspected the site and reported 10 confirmed casualties, with 2 people still missing. "Rescue operations are ongoing, and we're working to manage hazardous chemicals," he said. Under Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's directive, Kadam assessed the incident and discussed future safety measures. "The Chief Minister has ordered full support for the rescue operations and plans to relocate the hazardous chemical unit. We will finalize these plans and present them to him," Kadam stated.

Earlier, Ambadas Danve, Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, criticized the area's lack of industrial safety. "There is no Industrial Safety Department here, and such factories should not be near residential areas. This is a major oversight, and the factory management is responsible for the blast," Danve remarked. He noted that there have been multiple accidents in this industrial area since 2016, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.

The increase in residential development around the industrial zone has exacerbated safety risks. "This area was originally industrial, but more residents have moved in over the years. To prevent future incidents, we plan to relocate the hazardous chemical units or repurpose the area," Kadam explained. "We have made plans, and we await the Chief Minister's final approval."

Meanwhile, Thane Police have charged the company owners, including Malti and Malay Pradeep Mehta, under various sections of the IPC, such as 304, 324, 326, 285, 286, 427, and 34. The accused are currently missing, and five police teams have been deployed to find them. "The Mehta family and factory owner are absconding. We have formed teams to trace and arrest them," Thane Police reported.

Initial investigations indicate that the explosion was due to inadequate safety measures in chemical processing and storage at the plant in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area. The blast on Thursday was powerful enough to be heard several kilometers away, scattering reactor pieces up to a kilometer. "Lack of proper precautions led to the chemical explosion," Thane Police concluded.

Efforts are ongoing to manage the aftermath and ensure community safety.
