New Delhi: On October 12, Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate strongly criticised the sexually abusive comments made by fugitive Islamic preacher Zakir Naik towards female anchors. Reacting to Zakir Naik's derogatory remarks, she wrote on her Twitter account, "Such a cheap disgusting thinking, sick in fact."
Shrinate, who was a journalist for 17 years before joining the Congress party and has also worked as a news anchor, condemned the comments of fugitive Naik. Naik, while interacting with the media in Pakistan, said that women should avoid taking up professions where they have to be in front of the camera. She also claimed that in this way women become susceptible to the lust of men, and said, "If men do not feel lust on seeing a female anchor, then she is not medically fit."

"Kuran says, if a man doesn’t feel lust after staring at a woman for 20 mins, he’s mentally ill. I suggest he should see a psychiatrist"

Such is the mentality of Islamist Zakir Naik who preaches Islam. Don't forget that he is followed by the majority of Momins. pic.twitter.com/uOztjLBBJ7
The Islamic preacher also cited verses from the Quran and said, "If you don't feel lustful after looking at a girl for 20 minutes, you are not medically fit." Naik's comments recently sparked anger in Pakistan when he referred to unmarried, independent women as 'bazaari aurat'. Pakistani Muslims also burnt the effigy of Zakir Naik, a so-called Quran scholar, on the street and demanded his deportation. However, Indian Muslims have not shown much resentment towards Zakir Naik, who still has crores of followers on social media. Many terrorists have been caught in India, who have confessed that they became terrorists after listening to Zakir Naik's speeches. Now another of his comments has infuriated Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate.

"According to Islamic scholar Zakir Naik, a man can simply get away with punishment for rape & murder if he asks for forgiveness from Allah and also blames the girl for getting raped because of her clothing, if however she dressed modestly, then it was a test from Allah."

However, Supriya Shrinate's criticism should not be considered as the official stand of the Congress party, as other Congress leaders have not reacted against Naik's comments. In fact, the Congress party has never condemned Naik. Some time ago, a senior leader like Digvijay Singh had described Naik as a 'messiah of peace' and said that he is spreading the message of peace in the world.

It is also worth mentioning that there is a long-standing relationship between Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) and the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust (RGCT). IRF has donated Rs 50 lakh and Rs 25 lakh to RGCT on two separate occasions, and the trustees of RGCT are Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. This fact may surprise many, especially when Naik's inflammatory speeches are available online, which target Hinduism and support radicalism.
