New Delhi: The Special Cell of the Delhi Police installed 30 dummy improvised explosive devices (IEDs) at high-footfall (high-risk) places in the last month to check the preparedness of police forces in the national capital. Of these, public, and private security guards and local police were able to find only 12 IEDs. The decision to plant the dummy IED was taken after the terror outfit al-Qaeda threatened attacks in the Indian subcontinent.  

It may be recalled that the terror outfit Al Qaeda has threatened to carry out suicide bomb blasts in Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat over the alleged controversial statement made by former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma about Prophet Mohammed. During a recent crime review meeting, Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Hargobinder Singh Dhaliwal made a presentation before Commissioner of Police Rakesh Asthana regarding conducting such a fake infiltration exercise.

According to a media report, a senior police officer said, "The first batch of 15 dummy IEDs was planted in Delhi districts on June 12, and 10 of them were searched. In the southeast and northern districts, 2 out of 10 were detected by the public, 3 by the security guards of malls in the south, Rohini and outer districts and 5 by the local police of north, northeast, east, and north-west and outer north districts.''
