New Delhi: As preparations for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are underway, Delhi Police have made a significant arrest involving four individuals allegedly in possession of Rs 3 crore in cash suspected to be from Hawala transactions. Scheduled for May 25, the sixth phase of Lok Sabha elections will witness voting across all seven seats in Delhi.
The apprehension occurred at the Jharera flyover NH-48, where Delhi Cantt police station's beat staff intercepted four individuals along with their two-wheelers and two black bags. Upon inspection, the police discovered the substantial cash amount of Rs 3 crore in their possession. While initial suspicions point towards the money being linked to Hawala transactions, a thorough investigation has been initiated.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mohammad Shomin, Jishan, Danish, and Santosh. During questioning, they claimed that the seized amount represents Hawala funds belonging to a certain Mohammed lawyer Malik, who reportedly works as a scrap dealer in Shahdara.
In accordance with the Election Commission's guidelines, the relevant authorities, including senior officials, the Election Flying Squad Team, and Income Tax officials, were promptly informed about the situation. Subsequently, the arrested individuals and their phones were handed over to the aforementioned officials for further investigation.
