New Delhi: Moti Mahal and Daryaganj, two renowned Delhi-based restaurants, are embroiled in a legal battle over the claim of being the true creators of the famous dishes Dal Makhani and Butter Chicken. The conflict arises from Daryaganj's use of the tagline "Inventors of Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani," which Moti Mahal alleges is misleading. The Delhi High Court is set to adjudicate on this matter.
Moti Mahal, situated in the Daryaganj neighborhood, has sued the proprietors of Daryaganj restaurant, contending that the tagline creates a false impression of a connection between the two establishments. The court has issued summons to Daryaganj's owners, instructing them to respond in writing to the claims within a month. Justice Sanjeev Narula has scheduled a hearing for May 29 and notified Moti Mahal about the interim injunction appeal.
Both restaurants claim to be the originators of Dal Makhani and Butter Chicken. Moti Mahal asserts that its founder, Late Kundal Lal Gujral, developed these iconic dishes, while Daryaganj contends that Late Kundan Lal Jaggi is the true creator. Moti Mahal argues that Gujral invented Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, and Dal Makhani, using a unique recipe during the partition of India. The restaurant claims that Gujral's invention of the "makhani" or butter sauce, made with tomatoes, butter, cream, and spices, led to the creation of both dishes.
Daryaganj, in response, refutes the allegations, labeling the lawsuit as baseless and lacking a cause of action. The restaurant denies engaging in any misleading representation and emphasizes that the first Moti Mahal restaurant in Peshawar was founded by the forebears of both parties. The legal battle awaits resolution in the Delhi High Court.
