New Delhi: Delhi Congress workers staged a protest against Kanhaiya Kumar, the party's candidate from the North East Delhi seat, following the resignation of state Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely. Lovely's resignation came after he accused Kanhaiya Kumar of praising the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and its leader Arvind Kejriwal against the party's stance.

The protesting Congress workers gathered outside Kanhaiya Kumar's newly inaugurated office, holding black posters with "need local candidate not outsider" written on them. Lovely, in his resignation letter, criticized Kanhaiya Kumar for allegedly praising the Delhi CM, going against the party line and the beliefs of local party workers.

Lovely mentioned that the candidature of Kanhaiya Kumar and Udit Raj from the North West Delhi seat wasn't well received by Congress leaders and workers, who consider them as "outsiders".

Kanhaiya Kumar, a former president of the JNU Students' Union who joined the Congress in 2021, had contested from Bihar's Begusarai in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections on a Communist Party of India (CPI) ticket.

The BJP also took a dig at the Congress over Lovely's resignation. Party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the Congress for giving tickets to people like Kanhaiya Kumar, whom he accused of insulting the armed forces and glorifying Naxalites.

In his resignation letter, Arvinder Singh Lovely also accused Deepak Babaria, the Congress's general secretary in-charge for Delhi, of interference.

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge instructed party General Secretary KC Venugopal to communicate with Arvinder Singh Lovely and work towards resolving the crisis within the Delhi Congress, according to sources.
