Kochi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist), known for its stance on various social and political issues, has once again stirred controversy by extending support to individuals accused in a recent bomb blast incident. As reported on April 8, the arrest of Sabinlal, K Atul, Arun, and C Sayooj following the blast has prompted CPM State Secretary M V Govindan to offer a curious explanation. Govindan claimed that the arrested members of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) were actually on a "life-saving mission" when they arrived at the scene of the blast. He criticized the police action and maintained the innocence of the detained individual, although it remains unclear who exactly he refers to as the 'life saver'.

Despite previous assertions by CPM leadership refuting allegations of bomb-making activities within the party, Govindan's remarks have raised eyebrows. Meanwhile, K K Rema, the widow of T P Chandrasekharan, a former CPM leader who was murdered in 2012, has challenged Govindan's narrative. Rema questioned how DYFI members could have arrived at the blast site so promptly and whether they were aware of the bomb-making activities.

The situation has sparked debate as the CPM attempts to distance itself from both the blast and the accused individuals. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended CPM leaders who visited the home of Sharil, a CPM member killed in the blast, calling it a "natural and humanitarian gesture". However, senior CPM leader K K Shailaja suggested that the political affiliations of the accused should not be scrutinized, labeling them simply as criminals.

Amidst growing dissent within the CPM over the handling of the blast incident, questions arise about Govindan's criticism of the police, given that law enforcement falls under the purview of the Home Ministry, led by CPM's own Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan. Additionally, the term 'life saver' invoked by CPM leaders has drawn skepticism, especially considering past incidents where it was used to justify violent actions.

Union Minister V Muraleedharan has also weighed in, challenging CPM's stance and accusing the party of avoiding the truth. The brewing dissatisfaction within the CPM over its handling of the situation highlights concerns about its electoral prospects and internal cohesion.
