New Delhi: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) revealed its manifesto for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections on Thursday. Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the party, along with senior leaders Prakash Karat, Brinda Karat, and Nilotpal Basu, affirmed the party's commitment to revoke the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if elected to power.
During a press conference held at the party office in Delhi, Yechury stated that the CPI(M) is steadfast in its belief in the separation of religion from politics, the state, government, and administration. The party pledged to advocate for legislation against hate speech and crimes, emphasizing its resolve to abolish the CAA. The CPI(M) manifesto underscores its stance on reinstating the constitutional rights of states, which have been significantly diminished by the Modi government. It advocates for the devolution of 50% of Central tax revenue to the states, including surcharges and cess levied by the Centre. Additionally, the party calls for the selection of Governors from a panel of three eminent individuals proposed by the Chief Minister and opposes policies that promote centralization at the expense of states.
Furthermore, the CPI(M) manifesto reiterates its longstanding support for the autonomous status guaranteed under Section 370 of Jammu and Kashmir. The party pledges to advocate for the rights of the region's inhabitants through all available platforms and advocates for prompt elections to the State Assembly and the restoration of full statehood.
The CPI(M) manifesto also commits to enacting legislation for reservations in the private sector and promptly filling vacancies in reserved positions without dilution. It emphasizes the protection of the constitutional and legal rights of adivasis and calls for a caste census along with the overdue 2021 general census to obtain accurate data on OBCs. The manifesto further supports the immediate implementation of one-third reservations for women and seeks to strengthen justice processes for female victims of crimes.
Additionally, the CPI(M) underscores the need for urgent electoral reforms to reduce the influence of monetary resources in the electoral process. The party advocates for state funding of elections and a prohibition on corporate donations to political parties, proposing that corporate contributions be directed to a state electoral fund to fortify democracy. In summary, the CPI(M) manifesto outlines the party's key commitments and priorities for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, focusing on issues of governance, social justice, and electoral integrity.
