Lucknow: In Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh, police apprehended a suspected cow smuggler named Sufiyan after an encounter. Sufiyan, who already has multiple cases filed against him, fired at the police when they attempted to stop him during a routine check. In the ensuing gunfight, he was shot in the leg. A video of him pleading for forgiveness has since gone viral on social media.
According to media reports, the Kotwali police and Special Operation Group (SOG) team of Muzaffarnagar were conducting vehicle checks near the Kali River. When signaled to stop for checking, the bike rider attempted to flee from the checkpoint.
In the pursuit that followed, the suspect lost control of his bike and fell. Surrounded by police, he opened fire, prompting officers to return fire and injure him in the leg. Subsequently, the police apprehended him and took him to a hospital for treatment. The accused was later identified as Kaif alias Sufiyan from Shamli.
Further investigation revealed that Sufiyan is wanted by three police stations in the Shamli district and has a history of involvement in cow smuggling, as described in the Royal Bulletin report. Despite his pleas for leniency, stating, "I made a mistake sir, please forgive me once. This will never happen again," the police recovered a pistol, cartridges, and a motorcycle from him. He faces charges related to cow slaughter and theft in Shamli district, and authorities are currently reviewing his criminal record.
