Kochi: Kerala Police, under the oversight of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who also holds the Home Ministry portfolio, has filed a case against Krishnakumar, an actor and BJP leader in Thiruvananthapuram. The case stems from a Peace March held at the Palayam Martyr Column in Thiruvananthapuram, attended by prominent figures such as Rev. Bishop Dr. Mobil Mathew Kunnampilly, actor Jose, Brother-in-Church representative Gilber, YMCA former president Koshy M. George, Our Church’s Auxiliary for Social Action (CASA) secretary Aneesh Thyagarajan, BJP area president Sanal, and social worker V.T. Cherian.
The charges against Krishnakumar are related to his expressions of solidarity with Israel during the event, adding a layer of complexity to the political and religious dynamics in Kerala. The case raises questions about the boundaries of political expression in the context of religious gatherings. The charges include unlawful assembly, incitement, blocking the road, and creating danger. The case also involves Mobin Mathew Kunnampally and 58 others, though only these two names have been recorded.
Krishnakumar stated that they had obtained prior permission for the event, where about 100 people peacefully lit candles and prayed in the presence of around 10 policemen, including a Circle Inspector. He questioned how a program against the terror attacks in Israel could be interpreted as a call for violence. Political observers see the case against Krishnakumar as an attempt to gain favor with the minority vote bank. Krishnakumar highlighted the lack of cases against other leaders, such as Shashi Tharoor and Congress leader Rajmohan Unnithan MP, who made provocative statements at different rallies. The case has been registered under IPC sections 143, 147, 149, and 243. Krishnakumar questions the selective application of these charges, emphasizing unequal treatment in such matters.
