New Delhi: The Congress Party has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to issue a statement clarifying that his government has no intentions of amending the Constitution, contrary to claims made by several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in the past.

Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, voiced these concerns on Friday via X, expressing the hope that PM Modi would address important questions raised by the Congress during his public rally in Rajasthan's Churu, amidst what he described as the PM's routine dissemination of propaganda.

Ramesh emphasized that recent remarks by BJP leaders regarding potential changes to the Constitution are alarming, particularly regarding the future of Indian democracy if the BJP were to return to power.

He referred to statements made by Anant Hegde, a sitting BJP MP, who suggested that the BJP would amend the Constitution if it secured over 400 seats. Another BJP leader from Rajasthan, Jyoti Mirdha, echoed similar sentiments, indicating the party's intentions to amend the Constitution with a majority in both Houses of Parliament. Ramesh urged the Prime Minister to clarify his stance on this matter.

Additionally, Ramesh criticized the BJP's alleged disregard for free and fair elections, citing a recent incident involving former BJP MP Santosh Ahlawat, who was captured on video threatening government employees in Rajasthan to vote for the BJP. Ramesh questioned PM Modi's response to such rhetoric and its acceptance within a democratic framework.

Meanwhile, PM Modi addressed a public rally in support of paralympic gold medalist Devendra Jhajharia, who is now representing the BJP in the Churu Lok Sabha seat following Rahul Kaswan's switch to the Congress after being denied the BJP ticket.

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections will be held in seven phases starting April 19, with nearly 97 crore eligible voters. Rajasthan will vote in two phases on April 19 and April 26, with polling for 12 Lok Sabha seats in the first phase and the remaining 13 seats in the second phase.
