New Delhi: Income Tax Department has issued fresh notices to the Congress party amounting to Rs 1,745 crore for the assessment years 2014-15 to 2016-17. This adds to the previous demand of Rs 1,823 crore for the assessment years 2017-18 to 2020-21, bringing the total demand to Rs 3,567 crore for the years spanning from 1994-95 to 2020-21.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh disclosed the latest development, stating that the party had received "two more notices" the previous night. He reiterated the party's stance, labeling the actions as "tax terrorism".
The recent notices pertain to the assessment years 2014-15 (Rs 663 crore), 2015-16 (approximately Rs 664 crore), and 2016-17 (about Rs 417 crore). The taxation authorities have withdrawn the tax exemption previously granted to political parties and have now taxed the Congress for its entire revenue collection. Additionally, the party has been subjected to taxation for third-party entries recorded in diaries seized from its leaders during investigative raids.
This development comes after the Delhi High Court dismissed four fresh petitions filed by the Congress challenging the Income Tax reassessment proceedings initiated against it. These reassessment proceedings included penalty and interest charges and pertained to the assessment years 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20, and 2020-21.
In response, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP, warning that actions would be taken against those undermining democracy once the government changes hands. He emphasized that such actions would serve as a deterrent against future transgressions, asserting his commitment to upholding democratic principles.
