Dehradun: After the Morbi bridge accident in Gujarat, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered an inquiry into all the bridges in the state. Thereafter, Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department RK Sudhanshu got the safety audit of the bridges done on 9th November. The investigation report has been found surprising. In the audit, 36 bridges have been found to be completely unsafe.
According to reports, 20 bridges in Kumaon and 16 in Pauri are unsafe, according to the report given by the Chief Engineers of the Public Works Department. Apart from this, one bridge in Pithoragarh, five in USnagar, one in Dehradun, three in Haridwar, eight in Tehri, one in Chamoli, and one in Rudraprayag are unsafe for traffic. All these bridges have been banned. According to the news, out of a total of 3,262 bridges in the state, 2,518 bridges have been inspected so far.
On November 3, on the instructions of the Chief Minister, a security audit was conducted in 5 areas of the state. The officers were directed to submit the audit report within 3 weeks. The Principal Secretary of the Public Works Department said that a strategy has been chalked out to prepare damaged and dangerous bridges in the state with ADB, World Bank as well as many other funded schemes. After receiving the report, RK Sudhanshu has given instructions to the chief engineer of the Public Works Department to stop traffic on unsafe bridges immediately. These bridges will be made ready in the next few years.
