Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case: On Friday, August 16, the Calcutta High Court addressed the recent vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, which occurred during a protest on the night of August 14. The protest was held in response to the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor.

Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court expressed strong dissatisfaction with the West Bengal government's handling of the situation. He criticized the state's failure to effectively manage the protest, stating, "This is an absolute failure of state machinery. There was a police force present at the scene, but they couldn't protect their own men? It’s a sorry state of affairs. How can doctors work fearlessly in such conditions?"

The Chief Justice further questioned the enforcement of law and order, emphasizing the lack of proper control despite the presence of Section 144 of the CrPC, which restricts assembly. "You can’t have 7,000 people just walking in. When such a large crowd gathers, you should have secured the area properly," he added.

The Kolkata Police reported that approximately 40 individuals, who were not part of the protest but were disguised as protestors, entered the hospital grounds. These individuals vandalized property and threw stones at police officers. In response, the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd and regain control of the situation.
