New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has revealed plans to erect a border fence between India and Myanmar to regulate the influx of individuals. This decision follows an increase in the number of Myanmar soldiers seeking refuge in India amidst ongoing ethnic clashes. Over the past three months, nearly 600 Myanmar Army soldiers have entered India, finding shelter in Mizoram's Lawngtlai district after their camps were seized by the Arakan Army (AA), an ethnic armed group in the Rakhine state of western Myanmar, according to government sources.

The implementation of a border fence signifies India's intent to discontinue the Free Movement Regime (FMR) that currently exists between the two countries. Consequently, individuals residing in border areas will soon be required to obtain a visa to cross into the neighboring country.

The Free Movement Regime, established in the 1970s, allowed people along the India-Myanmar border to move freely, supported by familial and ethnic connections. However, the decision to install a border fence signals a shift in this policy, aiming to better control movement across the border in light of recent developments and challenges.
