KOLKATA: In a landmark milestone, the West Bengal government has drafted a draught policy under which idle state education department facilities can be given over to private entrepreneurs for use in the state's school education development.

"The Education Department has created a draught policy for establishing PPP (public-private-partnership) schools and has circulated it to other ministries for feedback. The policy could be redrafted and presented to the state Cabinet for approval based on the feedback "According to a senior official with the state Department of Education. The state government may, subject to availability, offer essential land, buildings, or infrastructure on specified terms and conditions, according to the proposed policy.

The state will assist private partners in acquiring the necessary clearances. To make the concept viable, the state can enable commercial partners to use classrooms and laboratories (of some state-run institutions) with approval from the school Education department.
