New Delhi: Indian Oil faced an unexpected crisis when it uncovered a audacious theft of oil, valued at lakhs, from one of its pipelines in Pochanpur village, Dwarka. The perpetrator, who has been apprehended, managed to dig a 40-meter-long tunnel to siphon off oil since June, according to the police. Although the company has not confirmed the exact quantity of oil stolen, it is clear that this was a significant theft operation.
M. Harsha Vardhan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Dwarka, revealed that several tools and instruments used in the commission of the crime were discovered at the scene of the theft. The Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) had suspected illicit oil activities in the area and promptly alerted the police, leading to a joint effort to enhance technical surveillance in the vicinity. According to the Delhi Police, the accused individual had been continuously pilfering oil from the IOCL pipeline, which was buried 2 meters underground. To carry out the theft, the perpetrator dug a tunnel spanning approximately 40 to 45 meters near the underground pipeline, which then opened into an adjacent plot of land. Through this tunnel, the thief diverted the oil using an additional pipe.
Furthermore, investigators found that the owner of the plot where the tunnel opened was also involved in the oil theft operation. The incident highlights the need for vigilance and security measures to protect critical infrastructure and valuable resources from such audacious criminal activities.
