New Delhi: After a parched May, residents of Delhi can anticipate relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts light rain and thunderstorms on Sunday. This morning, the national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 30.4 degrees Celsius, marking a deviation of 3.5 notches above the season's average. The maximum temperature is anticipated to hover around 43 degrees Celsius for the day.
Saturday witnessed scorching heat, with the maximum temperature soaring to 44.2 degrees Celsius, surpassing the season's average by 4.2 notches. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) registered the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi as moderate, with a reading of 184 at 9 am. An AQI within the range of zero to 50 is deemed good, while 51 to 100 is considered satisfactory, and 101 to 200 falls under the moderate category.
The NCDC released alarming data illustrating a surge in heatstroke-related fatalities. Since March 1, a distressing total of 56 individuals have tragically succumbed to heatstroke, with May alone witnessing 46 reported deaths attributed to heat-related ailments. The data further revealed an astonishing number of suspected heatstroke cases, with May alone accounting for 19,189 cases and the total figure reaching 24,849 since March 1. Additionally, while 605 fatalities were attributed to cardiac arrest, possibly aggravated by heatstroke, the cause of death remains unknown in 19,192 cases.
