Amaravati: Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, asked the Infrastructure and Investments (I and I) Department to develop and build at least seven new airports in the state under the "One District, One Airport" concept.
According to a news statement from the CMO, the Chief Minister said the "One District, One Airport" concept is a good one and requested officials from the I and I Department to build the new airports in a same fashion, with the capacity to accommodate even Boeing-type aircraft. At a review meeting on the I and I Department, the Chief Minister made this remark.
Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Rajamahendravaram, Kurnool, and Kadapa are among the 13 districts in Andhra Pradesh possessing operational airports. The government began the process of forming at least 12 new districts, but the CMO note did not specify whether each of the proposed new districts would have its own airport. The Chief Minister wants officials to start planning the development of current airports by creating an action plan with a deadline.
The GMR Group was awarded the contract for the development of a greenfield airport at Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram district, more than a year ago, but work has yet to begin due to land acquisition issues.
