Vijayawada: Rainfall caused by cyclonic storm Asani impacted agriculture and horticulture crops on around 30,000 hectares in Andhra Pradesh.
Paddy suffered the most damage in 30,225 hectares, followed by maize in 6,095 hectares, black gramme in 3,882 hectares, groundnut in 875 hectares, sesamum in 589 hectares, sunflower in 200 hectares, and bengal gramme in 150 hectares, while blackgram, bajra, cotton, sugarcane, ragi, and other crops were also affected by rain.
Several crops were planted on 8,22,994 hectares in the state during the rabi season. A total of 6,27,712 hectares of crops were harvested, with another 1,95,282 hectares still awaiting harvest. So far, the storm has affected 16,997 hectares of crops across the state.
Agriculture officers are doing a detailed enumeration of impacted crops in the affected areas through field inspections. "We only have a preliminary estimate on the crops affected by Asani," a government official stated. The impacted crops may survive without harm or loss if the rain stops and the water recedes from the fields."
In the case of horticulture, preliminary estimates show that crops distributed across 13,720 hectares have been damaged by more than 33%, affecting 21,044 farmers. The government estimates that the affected farmers will receive Rs 2,889 lakh in input subsidies.
Banana, papaya, chilli, mango, tomato, drumstick, guava, pomegranate, acid lime, oil palm, coconut, betel vine, and vegetables were damaged in 178 mandals across the state's majority of districts.
