Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has ordered students to vacate hostels and return home in view of the corona epidemic. The decision was taken at an online meeting of top officials of the AMU on Thursday and an order has been issued by university registrar Abdul Hamid on Friday to vacate the hostels to students.
Student leaders have strongly objected to the AMU administration's decision. Former president of the AMU Students' Union Faijul Hassan has said that a large number of students are staying in various hostels during the lockdown. Hassan told the press on Friday that these students are able to continue their online studies while staying in the hostel, but students from most rural areas will not be able to study from home as communication network problems will persist. Faijul Hassan said students on the university campus are getting the best medical assistance, including vaccination, which will not be available in most rural areas. He AMU requested officials to review the decision.
The registrar of AMU had announced yesterday that a letter would be sent to the parents of the students living in the hostel to ensure that their child vacates the hostel and returns home. A letter will be sent to all parents that this step is necessary to ensure the safety of the student's health in view of the epidemic. AMU spokesperson Professor Shafe Kidwai said the decision is in the interest of students and he will be able to stay safe in his homes.
