Srinagar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched a strong critique of the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance regarding the restoration of Article 370, declaring that “three generations” of their families would not be able to bring it back. Speaking at a public meeting in Chenani, Jammu and Kashmir, Shah emphasized the historic nature of the current elections, noting that it is the first time in post-independence India that elections are being held without Article 370 or a separate flag.
Shah addressed the NC and Rahul Gandhi directly, asserting, “You will all vote not just for Chenani but make a decision for the entire J&K. NC and Rahul Baba say that we will bring back Article 370, but I want to tell them that neither you nor the three generations of yours will be able to bring back Article 370.” He further criticized the three political families—the Gandhis, Muftis, and Abdullahs—claiming they only promote their own members for election tickets. “The three families have given tickets to their own people and made only 87 MLAs. But we made more than 30,000 Panch, Sarpanch, and Tehsil Panchayats. The river of corruption that they started was cleaned by Prime Minister Modi from the bottom,” he stated.
Shah also highlighted the BJP's focus on empowering marginalized communities, stating, “Since 2014, we have been working tirelessly to empower SCs, STs, Dalits, the poor, and women. We secured our borders and ensured reservation for our Pahadi brothers and sisters. Congress never cared for you; Abdullahs never cared for you. And you should remember this.”
Accusing the NC and Congress of perpetuating terrorism in the region, Shah remarked, “The world is closely watching the Jammu and Kashmir elections, where two vastly different visions are at play. On one hand, the NC, Congress, and PDP parties, perpetuating terrorism in the region for around 40 years, are eyeing power. On the other hand, the BJP, committed to rooting out terrorism entirely, offers an absolutely contrasting picture.”
Shah also condemned the historical inaction of the Abdullahs and Nehrus during periods of violence, stating, “It is Abdullahs and Nehrus who are accountable for the killing of 40,000 people in Jammu and Kashmir. Where was Farooq Abdullah at that time? He was vacationing in London during the summers, riding expensive motorcycles. No party, but only the BJP has eradicated terrorism from Jammu and Kashmir.”
In related news, the second phase of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls was held on Wednesday, recording a voter turnout of 57.03% until 11:45 pm, according to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Key turnout statistics include Budgam at 62.98%, Ganderbal at 62.51%, Poonch at 73.80%, Rajouri at 70.95%, Reasi at 74.70%, and Srinagar at 29.81%. The third and final phase of the J&K assembly polls is scheduled for October 1, with results to be announced on October 8.
