Dehradun: There is a huge threat looming over Joshimath in Uttarakhand at this time. People from more than 600 houses are being shifted. The government is constantly engaged in rescue work and is talking about providing relief to the people. Meanwhile, there is a situation similar to Joshimath in Karnaprayag in Chamoli. More than two dozen houses have developed cracks in the Bahuguna Colony of Karnaprayag, 75 km from Joshimath. The first cracks in these houses in Bahuguna Colony appeared about a decade ago, but now these cracks have become wide and long.
70-year-old BP Sati, a retired former supply officer from Karnaprayag, has a family of six people. BP Sati built his house many years ago in Bahuguna Nagar of Karnaprayag. According to him, there have been landslides and cracks in the house since about 2013. Apart from Karnaprayag, the people of Landor are also scared. At least 50 houses in Bahuguna Nagar in Karnaprayag, about 75 km from Joshimath, have been experiencing cracks since 2015. Locals attribute these cracks to the gradual erosion of the land. For this, violations of rules in the widening, and construction works of national highways are also blamed. People said that the erosion caused by the Pindar river and the haphazard extraction of rainwater are the reasons for all this.
Similar is the situation in parts of Chamoli district headquarters in Gopeshwar and Semi village near Guptkashi on the Kedarnath national highway. He demanded immediate assistance for the affected people as well as the preparation of a plan for the safety of local persons. Chamoli Collector Himanshu Khurana said that people living in cracked houses in Karnaprayag have been shifted to safer places. We are taking the help of experts from IIT-Roorkee to solve the problem in Karnaprayag. There have been cracks in the land in Atali village near Rishikesh. Villagers claim that neighboring Singtali, Lodsi, Kaudiala, and Bawani villages have also been affected due to a crack in the railway tunnel being built in the area. SDM Devendra Negi said that a team of experts has been formed, which will inspect the affected villages on January 15.
