Kolkata: On Saturday, July 27th, West Bengal Congress President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury strongly criticized state Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee. In response to her claims that her microphone was turned off during the NITI Aayog meeting, Chowdhury accused her of lying and called her actions a “Nautanki” (drama). He suggested that Banerjee was jealous of Rahul Gandhi and alleged that she had scripted her performance before attending the meeting. The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has already debunked Banerjee’s allegations, describing them as “misleading” and noting that her speaking time had simply expired.
Speaking to the media, Chowdhury said, “The things that Mamata Banerjee is saying regarding the NITI Aayog meeting, I feel like she is lying... it is very surprising if a state’s CM wouldn’t be allowed to speak. Mamata Banerjee knew what would be happening there… she had the script.” He further claimed that Rahul Gandhi’s emergence as a prominent opposition leader has made Banerjee jealous, stating, “Mamata Banerjee ki jalan (jealousy of Rahul Gandhi) shayad thodi jaroorat se jyada ho gayi hai.”
In addition to his verbal criticisms, Chowdhury has written a letter to President Droupadi Murmu, requesting her intervention to restore law and order in West Bengal. He cited concerns about the law and order situation and accused the TMC of using intimidation and terror tactics against opposition parties. He specifically mentioned the Sandeshkhali incident and alleged that the TMC engineered communal riots in Murshidabad District before the Lok Sabha elections to polarize voters.
Chowdhury emphasized that the murders of opposition party workers demonstrate that there is no space for opposition in the state. He described the situation as an “undeclared emergency” and pleaded with the President to ensure justice for the people of West Bengal.
In his letter, he stated, “It is not only disturbing but also deeply anguishing to see the anarchic condition in the State of West Bengal owing to the ruthless approach of the Ruling Party on the workers, sympathizers, and supporters of the Parties opposed to the ruling dispensation in the State.”
He highlighted the violence and exploitation, including the recent killing of a Congress activist in Jalpaiguri by TMC workers, and asserted that many innocent people have lost their lives or been imprisoned due to the TMC’s strong-arm tactics.
Chowdhury concluded his letter by urging the Finance Ministry to intervene and investigate, calling for the expulsion of those involved in the incident and the de-recognition of the trade union by the Bank of India. He emphasized that the current situation in West Bengal is one where the exercise of fundamental rights by the people is severely compromised.
