New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced plans to express solidarity with its national convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, who was recently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case. In a show of support, the party will conduct a 'mass fast' across India and abroad on Sunday, April 7, 2024.
Gopal Rai, a minister in the Delhi government, revealed that starting from 10 am on Sunday, AAP MLAs, MPs, office bearers, as well as party workers and supporters, will participate in a mass fast at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Additionally, similar fasting protests will take place in revolutionary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh's village, Khatkhar Kalan, in Punjab.
Rai emphasized that the fast will extend beyond India, with demonstrations planned in capital cities of 25 states across the country. Furthermore, international cities such as New York, Boston, Los Angeles, and Washington DC in the US; Toronto in Canada; Melbourne in Australia; and London in the UK will also witness AAP supporters rallying in solidarity with Kejriwal.
Rai alleged that the Modi government orchestrated a conspiracy and concocted a 'fake liquor scam' to undermine the AAP and Kejriwal. He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of shielding corrupt individuals within the BJP while hypocritically advocating for anti-corruption measures. Rai pointed to recent political alliances and defections involving figures like Ajit Pawar, Ashok Chavan, and Chhagan Bhujbal, who have either joined or allied with the BJP.
The tension between the AAP and the BJP has escalated significantly following Kejriwal's arrest in the excise case last month. Kejriwal was remanded to 14-day judicial custody on April 1, further intensifying the political rivalry between the two parties.
With Delhi's Lok Sabha elections scheduled for the sixth phase on May 25, 2024, the political landscape remains charged as parties vie for support and leverage ahead of the crucial polls.
