New Delhi: Following the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, members and supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have taken to the streets in protest, expressing continuous dissent. Simultaneously, the AAP headquarters has been completely sealed off. Minister Atishi conveyed how the party office has been blocked ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
Atishi remarked in a statement, "The Aam Aadmi Party office has been sealed off entirely. How can access to a national party office be obstructed during the Lok Sabha elections? This violates the commitment to a 'level playing field' as promised in the Indian Constitution. This is unacceptable."
AAP leader Saurabh Bhardwaj announced, "We will approach the Election Commission regarding this issue. The sealing of the party office is in breach of the code of conduct." Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate from his residence on the evening of March 21. The agency had initially arrived to conduct a search, but later discovered that he had been taken into custody.
Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court has remanded Kejriwal to the agency's custody for six days. He will remain in ED custody until March 28 and will be questioned regarding the liquor policy case. Following the CM's arrest, the Aam Aadmi Party has affirmed that their government will continue to function even from jail. Atishi has reiterated on numerous occasions that Kejriwal will continue as Chief Minister.
However, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court regarding this matter. It has been urged that it would be challenging to govern from jail, and thus, Kejriwal should be removed from the post of CM after his arrest. Conversely, the Aam Aadmi Party contends that the CM has not been proven guilty yet, and therefore, no law prohibits him from governing from jail in such circumstances.
