The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard the Kolkata rape and murder case and put the Mamata Banerjee government of West Bengal, the police, and the hospital administration directly in the dock. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, JB Pardiwala, and Manoj Mishra live-streamed the case and made scathing comments on the delay, negligence, and cover-up in the incident. The court has asked the central investigating agency CBI to file a status report by Thursday and has also announced the formation of a national task force on the safety of doctors.

Event details

The body of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor was found in a seminar hall at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 9. The doctor had injury marks on her body and was bleeding. Investigation revealed that the doctor was raped and later murdered. The police have arrested an accused named Sanjay Roy, but it is suspected that many people may be involved in the crime. The Kolkata High Court has handed over the investigation of the case from the police to the CBI.

Supreme Court asked questions

The Supreme Court asked several questions to the West Bengal government, hospital administration, and the police:

  1. Question on Principal : CJI Chandrachud asked why the principal was transferred to another college? Did the principal call the murder a suicide? Why was the information given to the victim's parents late?

  2. Question on hospital administration : CJI asked why the FIR was filed late? Why did the hospital management delay filing the FIR? Why was the body handed over to the parents late?

  3. Question on police : The court reprimanded the West Bengal government and police for the delay in filing the FIR. Why did the police not protect the crime scene and why did they allow the rioters to enter the hospital?

Formation of National Task Force

The Supreme Court has announced the formation of a National Task Force to ensure the safety of doctors. This task force will consist of expert doctors who will review the safety measures to be adopted across the country. The members of the task force are:

He said that the country's health system is in their hands and the Supreme Court is completely serious about ensuring their safety. He has appealed to the doctors to trust him and assured them that serious steps will be taken for their safety.

Statement of Solicitor General

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta warned against taking the case lightly and called it a serious sexual crime. He said that the matter should not be made a political issue and the parents had to wait for three hours to see the body. The questions raised and the order by the Supreme Court have shown the seriousness of the matter and indicated that the case will be investigated with complete transparency and strictness. The steps taken to ensure the safety of doctors will definitely help in preventing recurrence of such incidents in future.
