The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has taken an early lead in West Bengal as per the latest updates with the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) trailing behind. West Bengal, known for its intense political landscape, has the third-highest number of parliamentary seats in India, totaling 42, after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. Over the years, the state's politics has been dominated by Mamata Banerjee, known for her fiery persona and activist approach. Mamata not only leads the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) but is also the most prominent and charismatic figure in her party.
The recent Sandeshkhali incident, which garnered national attention due to anti-TMC protests, has intensified the political scenario in Bengal. The BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, is aiming to make significant gains in the state.
West Bengal elections are often marked by post-poll violence, and this year, nearly 400 Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) companies, comprising over 40,000 personnel, will remain deployed in the state until June 19.
Mamata vs Modi
While Mamata holds considerable influence over Bengal, she faces a formidable challenge from the Modi factor. The NDA (National Democratic Alliance), led by Prime Minister Modi, has achieved significant victories in regions previously considered strongholds of other parties. With a decade in power at the Centre, Modi's influence has grown, posing a daunting challenge for Mamata to counter.
Adding to the complexity, the Congress and Left alliance could further split the anti-BJP votes, potentially benefitting the BJP. This alliance might also mark a revival for the Congress and Left parties in the state, which have seen diminished political fortunes over the past decade.
BJP's Strategy and Challenges
Despite not having a strong grassroots presence, the BJP is leveraging the popularity of Prime Minister Modi. The party aims to capitalize on the anti-incumbency sentiment against the TMC, which has faced allegations of misrule and corruption.
Exit Polls
Exit polls indicate a strong performance by the BJP in West Bengal. India Today Axis My India predicts the BJP could win between 26 to 31 seats, while ABP News C Voter suggests 23 to 27 seats for the BJP. Similarly, TV9 Bharatvarsh Exit Poll forecasts around 17 seats for the BJP in the state.
Election Phases and Previous Results
West Bengal conducted its elections in 7 phases to elect 42 lawmakers. In the previous 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP made significant gains with 18 seats, while AITC won 22 seats and the INC secured 2 seats.
