Goa: The era of strict subject segregation is a thing of the past," Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Thursday, "as the world today is increasingly adopting a multidisciplinary approach in higher education to produce well-rounded individuals and better research outcomes."

After laying the foundation stone for the Sant Sohirobanath Ambiye Government College of Arts and Commerce's new campus in Pernem, North Goa, Naidu said that exposure to the arts and social sciences is known to boost students' creativity, critical thinking, and communication skills. "These qualities are in high demand in the twenty-first-century economy, where no sector of the economy works alone," he said to a crowd that included Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Union Minister Shripad Naik, and others.

Naidu praised the Goa government for establishing commerce and economics laboratories, as well as language labs, in several of the state's institutes, emphasising the need to produce world-class researchers not just in sciences, but also in social science, languages, and the fields of commerce and economics. He recalled that ancient India was home to several renowned institutions of advanced learning, including Nalanda, Vikramshila, and Takshashila, and that the need now is to reclaim the country's former glory and make it a leader in education, research, and innovation.

Naidu praised Goa's performance in higher education, noting that the state's Gross Enrollment Ratio in higher education for women was 30%, compared to the national average of 27.3 percent. He praised the state for having more female students in higher education than male students.
