Dehradun: Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced on Wednesday that the government is committed to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand before November 9, the state's foundation day.
Uttarakhand was officially formed on November 9, 2000, after being carved out of Uttar Pradesh. Initially named Uttaranchal, the state was renamed Uttarakhand on January 1, 2007.
"We have made decisions that previous governments avoided due to vote bank politics. The UCC bill will be implemented soon, and we are determined to have it in place before November 9," stated Chief Minister Dhami.
Dhami also emphasized the government's efforts to preserve the cultural and religious identity of Devbhoomi by preventing religious conversions, ensuring that the state's heritage is preserved for future generations.
The UCC Bill was introduced by the BJP government during a special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 6 of this year. The bill was passed with a strong majority on February 7, marking what Dhami described as a "historic day" in Uttarakhand's history.
The Uniform Civil Code aims to create a unified set of personal laws applicable to all citizens, regardless of religion, gender, or caste. This includes regulations related to marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Independence Day speech on August 15, also advocated for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code across the country. He emphasized that India must move towards a secular civil code to eliminate religion-based discrimination. The Prime Minister called for a national discussion on the proposed UCC and encouraged citizens to share their suggestions.
