Tim Walz, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate, is drawing attention in China due to his historical connections with the country. Walz, who was recently chosen by Kamala Harris as her running mate, has a background that includes teaching in China, which might impact his candidacy amid growing US-China tensions.

Chinese social media users have been abuzz about Walz’s time spent teaching in Guangdong Province in 1989, a period that coincided with the Tiananmen Square protests. His year-long stint teaching English and American history, along with a honeymoon in China, is currently a hot topic on Weibo, having garnered 12 million views.

Walz, now the governor of Minnesota, has often spoken fondly of his time in China, describing it as "one of the best experiences" of his life. The year 1989 is significant due to the Tiananmen Square massacre, which saw a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. Although Chinese social media is heavily censored regarding this historical event, comments about Walz’s presence in China during that time reflect a mix of nostalgia and skepticism.

While some users on Weibo are hopeful that Walz’s experience could lead to improved US-China relations, others express doubts. The country has since evolved from its pre-economic powerhouse days to a major global player, which adds a layer of complexity to how Walz’s past might be perceived today.

During his time in China, Walz taught at Foshan No. 1 High School under a Harvard University volunteer program. He later remarked that China had the potential for great achievements with the right leadership, praising the kindness and capabilities of its people. Walz and his wife even started a business organizing educational trips to China for US students.

Republicans have not yet officially responded to Walz’s China connections, but there has been some criticism from former Trump allies. Richard Grenell, a former acting director of National Intelligence, criticized Walz on social media, suggesting his nomination would be favorable to China.

As the election approaches, Walz's historical ties with China may continue to spark debate and could influence perceptions of his candidacy amid strained US-China relations.
