US Deploys THAAD Missile Defense System in Israel to Strengthen Air Defense Amid Tensions

The United States is deploying its advanced THAAD missile defense system to Israel, along with American troops, to enhance Israel's defense capabilities amid rising tensions with Iran. The move, authorized by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, aims to bolster Israel's air defense systems during this volatile period.

The Pentagon announced the deployment on October 13, following Iran's warnings for the US to avoid military involvement in the region. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin made this decision under President Joe Biden’s guidance to reinforce Israel’s defense posture against increasing threats.

This deployment follows a series of missile attacks on Israel, most notably on October 1, when 180 missiles were launched. Additionally, Israel has escalated its military activities against Hezbollah in Lebanon, intensifying airstrikes and operations along the border.

What is THAAD?

THAAD, or Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, is a sophisticated US missile defense system designed to intercept ballistic missiles at high altitudes. It offers protection against short-, medium-, and limited intermediate-range missile threats. With a coverage area of 150-200 kilometers (93-124 miles), THAAD is an essential component of Israel's missile defense network, complementing other systems, including the recently retired Patriot system.

Each THAAD battery is composed of truck-mounted launchers, interceptors, radar systems, and requires 95 soldiers to operate effectively.

The deployment of THAAD signals the potential involvement of US troops in the Israel-Iran conflict, particularly after the recent Hamas attack on Israel on October 7. Iran's missile strikes have further escalated tensions, making the THAAD system a crucial addition to Israel's defensive strategy.

This advanced system is a key asset in the US military’s missile defense framework, especially in regions facing significant threats from ballistic missile attacks.
