The United States Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, has reiterated warnings to Iran, emphasizing "serious consequences" if Tehran attempts a direct military attack against Israel. In a conversation with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Austin discussed ongoing security issues and assured US support for Israel’s right to self-defense.
Austin made it clear that dismantling attack infrastructures along Israel’s northern border is essential to prevent further assaults from Hezbollah, particularly in light of the recent escalation. He stated that the US is prepared to defend its personnel, partners, and allies from any threats posed by Iran or Iran-backed groups.
Highlighting the importance of diplomacy, Austin urged for a resolution that would allow civilians to return safely to their homes on both sides of the border. He further emphasized that the US remains vigilant against any efforts to expand the conflict.
Austin also underscored the gravity of the situation, warning Iran of serious repercussions should they choose to attack Israel.
The recent tensions follow Israel’s precision strikes in Beirut, which resulted in the death of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stern warning to Iran, stressing that anyone targeting Israel will face consequences.
