New Delhi: Tripura witnessed a voter turnout of over 32.06% till 11 am in the ongoing polling for 60 Assembly seats, the Election Commission informed on Thursday. Tripura recorded a 13.69% voter turnout till 9 am. Polling commenced at 7 am and will carry on till 4 pm.
The highest percentage was reported in Dhalai (33.92%), followed by Gomati (30.57%), Khowai (30.88%), North Tripura (29.58%), Sepahijala (31.72%), South Tripura (33.61%), Unakoti (31.85%), and West Tripura (33.88%), according to the most recent data provided by the Election Commission. The 259 candidates' fate will be decided in the current elections for 60 Assembly seats.
The polls this year will feature a triangular contest, with the Congress-CPM battling in partnership and the Trinamool Congress also fielding candidates in several districts. The Tipra Motha, an alliance of regional organisations, is the underdog in the current election and could end up being the deciding factor if the Assembly is evenly divided.
The BJP has declared candidates for 55 assembly seats, leaving the remaining five seats for its ally, the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT). For all 60 seats, the Left-Congress coalition announced candidates.
More than 28.14 lakh people are registered to vote this year, of whom 14,15,233 are men, 13,99,289 are women, and 62 are of a third gender.
Polling is underway in a total of 3,337 polling places. With 97 all-women police stations, adequate security precautions have been arranged for the elections. There are 94,815 voters between the ages of 18 and 19 and 6,21,505 between the ages of 22 and 29. The age bracket of 40 to 59 has the most voters (9,81,089).
The current state assembly elections will primarily be decided by the tribally dominant seats in the state. There are 20 seats in Tripura that are primarily held by tribal people. Along with other parties, the CPI (M) will run for 43 seats, while its Left Front allies Forward Block, RSP, and CPI will each run for one. On 13 seats, the Indian National Congress will run for office. The TMC, however, will contest 28 seats. There will be 58 candidates running on their own.
