Chennai: The government of Tamil Nadu is developing a new initiative programme named "SIRPI" (Students In Responsible Police Initiative), similar to the National Cadet Corps (NCC). Chief Minister MK Stalin will launch the programme.
SIRPI units are being created by the Greater Chennai Police. 50 students will be selected from 100 schools for the initial round.
The project, according to the Tamil Nadu government, aims to address the issue of juvenile delinquency, driven by various factors such as socio-economic status, peer pressure, lack of family support and unemployment. Also, the program includes taking students on tours, taking them to reputed educational institutes to enhance their skills, imparting legal literacy in collaboration with government and non-government organizations to make them socially responsible.
The rehabilitation camp for Sri Lankan Tamils, which is being built at Thotanuthu village in Dindigul District at an estimated cost of Rs. 17.17 crores, has finished its last phase. There are 321 homes being constructed.
Also, a 60,000-liter capacity overhead water tank has been installed at an estimated cost of Rs 14 lakh in the rehabilitation camp area. A park and library are also being created, with a projected cost of Rs. 11 lakh.
Apart from this, the scheme has also made provisions to inform the students about emergency numbers including police control room emergency number, Kavalan app, elderly helpline number, police arms and create awareness among them.
