In the last 2 months, there is a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases despite this the Meghalaya government on Sunday for holding a cricket tournament for this the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chastised the CM Conrad Sangma.

Despite the State Government's recent order prohibiting all types of official, public, and political gatherings in order to combat the spread of COVID-19, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has organised a sports tournament that is currently underway at the Police Parade Ground in Tura, according to the TMC.

The TMC said that "hundreds of individuals were witnessed flouting COVID-19 protocols at the day-night sports competition."  Given the recent spike of COVID-19 cases, with the highest cases of up to 160 being registered in Meghalaya, the Opposition party claims that the 15-day tournament (from January 14 to January 30) will be disastrous.

"When Meghalaya's health infrastructure is in tatters, the total disregard for the epidemic is quite worrying," the TMC added. According to the TMC, the Chief Minister's irresponsibility is "shameful." According to the party, this isn't the first time the Chief Minister has been caught breaking COVID-19 protocols.

The TMC said that during his visit to Batabari village in Rajabala constituency, where a massive gathering was organised in the presence of newly-elected National People's Party (NPP) member Abdus Saleh, Sangma violated precautionary measures.
