Jerusalem: Tensions have intensified between Saudi Arabia and Israel amidst the ongoing 11-month conflict between Israel and Hamas, sparked by a controversial statement from Israel’s National Security Minister, Itamar Ben Gvir. Ben Gvir's assertion that he would build a Jewish prayer area within the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex if given the opportunity has provoked significant outrage across Islamic countries, particularly in Saudi Arabia.

In his statement, Ben Gvir, known for his hardline stance, also called for Jews to be permitted to pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This remark comes at a sensitive time when ceasefire negotiations are underway in Gaza, and Islamic nations are seeking a resolution to the conflict.

Ben Gvir’s interview included a declaration that he would install a Jewish prayer area and an Israeli flag at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, should he have the chance. This statement has been condemned by Saudi Arabia as a provocative and conspiratorial act against Muslims, prompting a call for the international community to hold the Israeli minister accountable.

Following Saudi Arabia’s strong reaction, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant acknowledged that Ben Gvir's comments have exacerbated tensions in the Middle East. He cautioned that altering the status quo of the Al-Aqsa Mosque could be perilous for Israel.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque, situated on a hill in the heart of Jerusalem, holds significant religious importance across Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. It is believed to have been constructed by Caliph Il-Abr-Khattab, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, and is the third holiest site in Islam where the Prophet is said to have led prayers during the Miraj.

In Jewish tradition, the site is referred to as Temple Mount, believed to be the location of two ancient Jewish temples. For Christians, it is the site where Jesus Christ preached and was crucified.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque complex spans 35 acres and is venerated by followers of all three major religions. It has long been a focal point of dispute between Israel and Palestine, with both sides claiming it as their own.
