Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged to review the possibility of banning Kangana Ranaut’s forthcoming film, "Emergency," following a meeting with the Sikh community. This assurance was communicated by government advisor Mohammad Ali Shabbir on Thursday.
A group from the Telangana Sikh Society, led by former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, met with Shabbir at the Secretariat to express their concerns about the film. They have requested that the movie not be shown in Telangana, arguing that it portrays the Sikh community inaccurately.
The delegation, comprising 18 members, submitted an official petition to the state government. They believe the film depicts Sikhs in a harmful light, portraying them as terrorists and anti-nationals, which they find offensive and damaging to their community's image.
Shabbir relayed these concerns to Chief Minister Reddy, who has pledged to consider the request for a film ban after obtaining legal advice. The state government is now awaiting this legal opinion before making a final decision on the release of "Emergency" in Telangana.
Kangana Ranaut's film Emergency, which she both directed and produced, is set to be released in early September. Former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon has expressed concerns that the pre-release trailers depict the Sikh community in a negative light.
In response, government advisor Mohammad Ali Shabbir formally asked Chief Minister Revanth Reddy to consider banning the film in Telangana. Shabbir emphasized that the film's portrayal could offend the Sikh community and potentially cause unrest.
Following the meeting with Shabbir, Chief Minister Reddy assured that he would decide on the film’s ban after consulting with legal experts. This situation underscores the ongoing sensitivity surrounding media representations of minority groups in India, and how Telangana's government addresses it may influence future responses to similar concerns.
