Britain's first turbaned Sikh Member of Parliament, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, has been elected as the Chairman of the Defence Committee in the new Parliament. Dhesi, a Labour MP representing Slough, won the position on Wednesday after securing 320 out of 563 valid votes. His opponent, fellow Labour MP Derek Twigg, received 243 votes.

"I am delighted to have been elected Chair of the Defence Committee. I would like to thank my colleagues across the House for placing their confidence in me," Dhesi said.

He continued, "The threats we face at home and abroad are growing in both scale and complexity. As Defence Committee Chair, I will focus on ensuring our nation can rise to these challenges. I will be a voice in Parliament for Armed Forces personnel and veterans—brave individuals who make an invaluable contribution to our safety and security."

Former Indian MP Tarlochan Singh, currently visiting the UK, congratulated Dhesi on his new role. Singh said, "Dhesi becoming the Chairman of the prestigious Parliamentary Committee dealing with the army, airforce, and naval services is a tribute to his role in the previous two parliaments. Having been a Member of Parliament in India, I understand the importance of Parliamentary Committees. The UK Parliament and Government have shown their confidence in Dhesi's ability."

several prominent new MPs have secured influential positions. Liam Byrne has been selected for the business committee, Helen Hayes will focus on education, Florence Eshalomi is set to tackle housing issues, and Andy Slaughter will oversee justice matters.

The selection process for these pivotal roles saw at least half a dozen new MPs on the shortlist for significant committee positions, including justice, education, and housing. Despite their aspirations, some candidates either fell short of the necessary support or chose to withdraw their candidacies.

This reshuffling highlights the dynamic nature of parliamentary committees and the competitive environment for securing key roles. The newly appointed MPs are expected to bring fresh perspectives and drive forward important discussions and policies in their respective areas.
