NASA astronaut Sunita Williams is set to celebrate her 59th birthday aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on September 19, 2024. Originally planned to last just seven days, her mission has been extended until at least February 2025 due to delays in Boeing's Starliner spacecraft. This marks the second time Williams will celebrate her birthday in space, a unique honor that aligns with her extraordinary career.

Born on September 19, 1965, in Euclid, Ohio, to parents Dr. Deepak Pandya and Bonnie Pandya, Williams grew up in Massachusetts. She graduated from Needham High School in 1983 and later pursued a Bachelor of Science in Physical Science from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1987. A dedicated scholar, she also earned a Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.

Her first long-term space adventure took place from December 2006 to June 2007, during NASA’s Expedition 14/15. Serving as a Flight Engineer aboard the ISS, Williams contributed to vital scientific research. She returned for another extended mission in 2012, spending time aboard the ISS during Expedition 32/33, which marked the first occasion she celebrated her birthday in space.

Williams’ connection to her Indian heritage has always been a defining trait. On one of her missions, she famously brought along a copy of the Bhagavad Gita, samosas, and a figurine of Lord Ganesha. These personal items, along with her groundbreaking career, reflect her deep-rooted cultural pride.

Currently, Williams is joined aboard the ISS by fellow astronaut Barry Wilmore. The duo is expected to return to Earth in February 2025 via SpaceX's Dragon Crew space capsule, which now serves as their emergency return vessel. Until then, they await the arrival of NASA’s SpaceX Crew-9 mission, set for no earlier than September 24, 2024.

With this mission, Sunita Williams will have accumulated more than 322 days in space, a testament to her dedication, resilience, and pioneering spirit. As she celebrates her 59th birthday floating above Earth, her journey continues to inspire aspiring astronauts and space enthusiasts alike.
