NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended warm greetings to former Congress president Sonia Gandhi on her birthday and also prayed for her lon- life and good health.
In his post on X, Modi said, "Greetings to Smt. Sonia Gandhi Ji on her birthday. I pray for her long life and good health."
Congress Party leaders and prominent figures also took to social media to wish Sonia Gandhi, acknowledging her long-standing commitment to India's founding principles and her role in shaping key legislations. The party celebrated her contributions to social justice and inclusive growth, highlighting her leadership in landmark reforms such as MGNREGA and the Right to Information.
Congress expressed their admiration for Sonia Gandhi’s work and vision on the platform X, saying, "A leader whose commitment and belief in the founding principles of India and the Congress party are an inspiration. Her dedication to women's empowerment, social justice, and inclusive growth has uplifted millions of marginalized people, strengthening India's welfare state."
The post further highlighted her significant role in major reforms, including MGNREGA, the Right to Food, the Right to Education, and the Right to Information. These reforms have deeply impacted India's political, social, and economic landscapes. It also noted her selflessness, grace, and dignity in public life, wishing her continued good health, happiness, and strength as she inspires future generations with her vision.
Sonia Gandhi became the Congress president in 1998, leading the party to victory in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and forming the UPA coalition. Despite being poised to take on the role of Prime Minister in 2004, she chose to pass on the responsibility to Manmohan Singh. A similar situation arose in 2009, where she once again nominated Dr. Manmohan Singh instead of taking the Prime Minister's position herself. Sonia’s decisions were unexpected, and although Dr. Singh served as Prime Minister for ten years, her leadership and the Gandhi family's influence over the party remained unmistakable.
