Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation will open 28 schools with smart classrooms shortly. Mayor R.Priya inspected construction on smart classrooms in Royapuram, Thiruvanmiyur, and Adyar on Tuesday as part of the CITIIS (City Investments To Innovate, Integrate, and Sustain) programme.
At a cost of 4.53 crore, work on developing smart classrooms is underway at Chennai Primary School on Cemetery Road in Royapuram zone, ward 51. Ms. Priya spoke with students in several of the smart classrooms that have already been built. In the near future, more smart classrooms will be constructed. The AFD, a French development agency, is funding the project. The project is expected to cost Rs95.25 crore, with the French development agency contributing Rs76.2 crore and Chennai Smart City Limited contributing Rs19.05 crore.
The project comprised hard and soft infrastructure improvements for smart classrooms. In Chennai Middle School in ward 179 in Gandhi Gramam, Lakshmipuram in Adyar zone, the Mayor visited modern toilets developed in schools under the CITIIS project. Ms.Priya also checked out the smart classrooms at Chennai Higher Secondary School at Bharathidasan Salai, Thiruvanmiyur, Ward 180.
This year, enrolment in Chennai Corporation schools has increased. After a decade, the number of students enrolled has surpassed one lakh. Because many parents were unable to pay fees in private schools, enrolment in Chennai institutions jumped from 85,000 to 1.3 lakh after the pandemic. In the 281 Chennai Schools with 2,731 teachers, students will receive a free education in smart classrooms.
