CHENNAI: A primary school headmistress in Tamil Nadu's Erode district was arrested on Saturday for allegedly making six Scheduled Caste (SC)students clean the school toilets.
The incident had come to light recently when some parents of students noticed blisters on their children's hands and enquired about it.
Geetha Rani, the headmistress of Palakkarai Panchayat Union Primary School, was detained from Perundurai in the district.
One of the children, who was admitted to the hospital for dengue treatment, had told his mother that a few students were being made to regularly clean the school toilets with bleaching powder. The school has one toilet for students and another for the teachers.
Later, the Education Department ordered the headmistress to appear before it, but she absconded, as per reports.
Thereafter, the boy's mother approached the police station where a case has been registered against Geetha Rani and launched a search to trace her.
Meantime, the district education authorities also conducted an inquiry into the matter and found it to be true. The headmistress was put on suspension on November 30.
