Veteran actress Saira Banu often shares old memories on Instagram. Recently, she wrote a long note and told a 64-year-old story. Saira told that late actress Madhubala was interested in her late husband and actor Dilip Kumar.
Saira Banu shared an old photo of herself and a poster of the film 'Mughal-e-Azam' on Instagram. She wrote, "After this I convinced my mother to get out of her western blouses and skirts and give me the most heavily embroidered saree she had."
Saira revealed that the saree was very heavy and was very difficult to wear. She said, "The effect of the costume was to scream on me as I weighed barely a paper weight kilo and the saree weighed a ton. But do you think I will give up? I wore it with the help of my mother and I bravely faced the storm of swaying while walking along with the heavy fabric."
Saira said that many beauties of that era had a crush on Dilip Kumar and wanted to marry him. She wrote, "I had built castles in the air for many years and knew all the mesmerizing beautiful women like the enchanting beauty Madhubala and many others who were interested in Sahib, but do you think anything could stop me from my dream of becoming Mrs. Dilip Kumar?"
Saira recalled that the premiere of 'Mughal-e-Azam' took place on August 5, 1960 at Maratha Mandir. The entire film industry was present there at that time, but Dilip Kumar was not there. Saira wrote, "My eyes were searching wildly from one face to another, but there was no glimpse of sahab. The moments when I used to exchange glances with him were wasted and I felt a cold water spring!"
Saira told that there was tension between Dilip Kumar and 'Mughal-e-Azam' director K. Asif. Asif sahab had surprised sahab and his family by marrying secretly. Due to this their friendship turned sour.
Saira told that Dilip Kumar had never seen 'Mughal-e-Azam'. But after marriage, Saira persuaded Dilip Kumar to watch 'Mughal-e-Azam'. 'Mughal-e-Azam' was taught like a chapter of a play in an institute in Pune, then Saira persuaded Dilip Kumar to watch 'Mughal-e-Azam' for the first time.
