NEW DELHI: The hearing in the defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been rescheduled for June 26 due to the judge's absence. The case revolves around alleged objectionable remarks made by Gandhi against Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The proceedings are being conducted in the MP/MLA court in Delhi.

The complaint was filed by BJP leader Vijay Mishra. According to Santosh Kumar Pandey, Mishra's lawyer, the hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, but it had to be postponed because the concerned judge was on leave. The judge, Shubham Verma, had previously set June 18 as the hearing date.

Earlier, Gandhi had appeared in court on February 20 for the defamation case and was granted bail. The complaint against him dates back to August 4, 2018, following remarks he made about Shah during a press conference in Bengaluru.

Gandhi's comments allegedly referred to the BJP's claim of honest politics despite having a party president who was once accused in a murder case. At the time of Gandhi's comment, Shah was indeed the BJP president. It's noteworthy that about four years prior to Gandhi's statement, Shah was discharged by a special CBI court in Mumbai in connection with a 2005 fake encounter case. This case was during Shah's tenure as the Minister of State for Home in Gujarat.
