How Putin Launches Nuclear Forces Drills Amid West Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated a significant exercise of the nation’s nuclear forces on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. This extensive drill involved missile launches simulating a retaliatory strike, showcasing Russia’s nuclear capabilities amidst escalating tensions with the West over the situation in Ukraine.

During discussions with military leaders, Putin emphasized that the drills would replicate officials' actions in the event of using nuclear weapons. The exercise includes the launch of ballistic and cruise missiles. Defence Minister Andrei Belousov noted that the purpose of these drills is to rehearse the strategic offensive forces executing a substantial nuclear strike in response to an enemy’s nuclear attack.

Putin affirmed that Russia's nuclear arsenal serves as a "reliable guarantor of the country's sovereignty and security." As part of the exercise, the military successfully test-fired a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) from the Kamchatka Peninsula. Additionally, the Novomoskovsk and Knyaz Oleg nuclear submarines launched ICBMs from the Barents Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk, while nuclear-capable Tu-95 strategic bombers conducted practice launches of long-range cruise missiles.

Through these exercises, Putin aims to demonstrate Russia's preparedness and deterrent capabilities in a time of rising geopolitical tensions.

In September, President Putin suggested changes to Moscow's nuclear doctrine, allowing for a nuclear response to a “massive” air attack. According to the proposed guidelines, Russia would consider any assault from a non-nuclear country that has backing from a nuclear power as a joint attack, which appears to target Ukraine. These developments come as Ukraine is seeking permission to use long-range missiles against Russia, a request that has met with hesitance from the U.S. up to this point.
