The Meghalaya district administration of West Jaintia Hills has imposed curfew in the village Sahsniang until further orders, following reports of post-vote counting violence on Thursday, March 2
According to a directive from District Magistrate B.S. Sohliya's office dated March 2, the administration has learned about the post-counting violence in Sahsniang village. "There is concern that the violence may expand and increase if left unmanaged and may result in the destruction of property and a risk of a loss of lives," the order said.
"I am confident that the revelation of the same undermines efforts to uphold law and order. Whereas I am confident that a curfew can be imposed in these districts to guarantee that the violence stops right away and that public order is restored in the region, the order contents read.
"In exercise of the powers bestowed upon me under Section 144 Cr. PC, I, B.S. Sohliya, IAS, District Magistrate, West Jaintia Hills District do hereby imposed CURFEW in Sahsniang, village with immediate effect and till further orders," it said.
The National People's Party emerged as the single-largest party, obtaining 26 seats, in the Meghalaya Assembly elections that were completed on Thursday.
In the meantime, the NDPP-BJP alliance won a resounding victory in Nagaland, and the BJP made history on Thursday by retaking power in Tripura.
The National People's Party, which won the most seats with 26, has opted to lend support to the BJP, which is also competing to form the government in Meghalaya.
While they were allies in the previous administration, the BJP and NPP ran in separate elections.
The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won 25 seats in Nagaland, while the BJP got 12 seats. Seven seats were won by the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), five by the National People's Party (NPP), two each by the Naga Peoples Front, the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), and the Republican Party of India (Athawale). The Janata Dal (United), led by Nitish Kumar, won one seat.
